An extra 2,500 hotel bedrooms will be created in Dublin if the 13 new hotels being proposed are developed, according to estate agent JLL.

Daniel O'Connor of JLL told the Irish Independent that 13 new hotels are in the planning stage, although two have so far been refused planning permission.

Including the hotels currently underway and extensions to existing hotels, an extra 3,500 rooms will be created in the city if all plans come to fruition.

A recent survey carried out by accounting firm Crowe Horwath revealed that an additional 5,000 hotel rooms will need to be created in the next three to five years to cater for demand in the capital.

The extra rooms could help attract the Web Summit back to the city if the projects are completed before the end of the decade and would also help with Ireland's bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup, said O'Connor.

Irish investment group Tetrarch is currently seeking permission to build a "budget boutique" hotel on Sackville Place just off Dublin's O'Connell Street while during the summer a Co. Tyrone-based company was awarded building permission to develop a Holiday Inn Express on O'Connell Street. Dalata has also announced plans to open new hotels in the city.
