80 Jobs Lost As Ballybunion Hotel Closes

The popular beachside Golf Hotel in Ballybunion, Co Kerry is to close, with the owners citing poor bookings for the rest of the year as the chief reason behind the decision.

The closure is with immediate effect with the loss of around 80 full-time seasonal jobs, RTE's website reports.

The hotel, which traditionally opened between the months of March and October, and whose main target market was Irish holidaymakers, pointed to bookings for the summer that were only just above 20 per cent of capacity. At the same stage last year that figure was 70 per cent.

According to RTE, the owner Michael Carr said a lack of support from local and national tourism bodies also contributed to the decision.

The hotel, which was due to celebrate 50 years in business this summer, will see its contents sold via public auction this weekend.
