Aran Islands Air Service Tender Re-Advertised
The Government has again invited tenders for a year round passenger air service to the the Aran Islands, with the move following its decision to cancel the tender last September.
It is reported that the airport at Inverin in Connemara has been earmarked this time as the mainland terminal for the €3.6 million subsidised air service to the islands.
The advertisement of the new tender follows substantial local opposition last year to Executive Helicopters initially being selected to provide a helicopter passenger service to the Aran Islands, with Galway Airport originally pencilled in as the mainland landing point location.
According to Galway Bay FM, this caused outrage in the Aran Islands, given that fixed wing planes suitable for travel to the islands with a mainland base in Inverin had operated successfully for many years.
Following the protest last year, the Government eventually shelved the original tender process.
