New Lord Mayor of Dublin Calls For 1% Tax Levy On Hotel Rooms

Labour Councillor Brendan Carr, who was elected as the new Lord Mayor of Dublin on Monday night, is calling for a one per cent tax on each hotel bed in the city.

It is reported that the council is currently taking legal advise on the matter, which Carr said would generate €7 million annually and would be used to help better support arts and culture in the capital.

It is expected that any move to impose the new levy would be met with strong opposition from the hospitality sector in Dublin.

Councillor Carr was elected by an alliance of Labour, Sinn Fein, Green Party and Independent councillors. He's also proposing new signage for businesses that pay workers a living wage.
