Planned Sackville House Hotel Halted by Objection

The latest addition to hotel group Tetrarch Capital's portfolio has hit a barrier after a rival Dublin 1 hotel raised objections to An Bord Pleanála.

Wynn's Hotel has temporarily blocked plans by Tetrarch to build a seven-storey 158-bedroom hotel at Sackville House, just off Dublin's O'Connell Street.

Wynn's, which is situated on nearby Lower Abbey Street, has claimed the planning permission should be reconsidered as the description of the hotel to be built is inaccurate and shows "a lack of ambition for the site and for the city including O’Connell Street”, the Irish Examiner reports. Planning permission for the new venture was granted last month by Dublin City Council.

Wynn's has taken issue with the description of the hotel, which Sagrada Ltd., on behalf of Tetrarch, said will be a "budget boutique" hotel. “A boutique hotel is a small hotel between 10 and 100 rooms with a high degree of individuality, often with individually designed rooms," read the appeal.

"The permitted hotel has 160 rooms, all laid out in a common plan. The reception, bar and buffet all occupy a single space in the lobby.”

Tetrarch, which owns a number of hotels in Ireland including The Marker, Powerscourt hotel and Mount Juliet, bought the former three-storey office building behind the former Clerys department store two years ago for in excess of €4m.
