Royal Visit Provides Tourism Boost For North West

Tourism Ireland has welcomed the visit by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, which it believes is good news for tourism and provides an opportunity to convince potential holidaymakers in Ireland's largest tourism market to visit Donegal during 2016.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, commented: "With Ireland in the news spotlight again this week during the visit by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, Tourism Ireland will take every opportunity to maximise the tourism benefits of the royal visit. Journalists from Great Britain are in Ireland to cover the visit, beaming images of Donegal, including tourist attractions like Donegal Castle, directly into the homes of potential British visitors. Tourism Ireland will work to exploit this unique opportunity to highlight Ireland as a wonderful holiday destination."

Gibbons added that Great Britain is the largest market for tourism to the island of Ireland and 2016 has got off to a positive start, with the most recent CSO figures for Q1 showing growth of 17% in visitors from Britain.

"We are undertaking an extensive programme of promotions throughout 2016, to keep the momentum going and build on that growth," he said.
