Titanic Belfast Named Europe's Leading Tourist Attraction

The World Travel Awards has named the Titanic Belfast as 'Europe's Leading Tourist Attraction', beating the likes of the Eiffel Tower, Greece's Acropolis, the Roman Colosseum and Buckingham Palace.

The ceremony, which was held in Sardinia, is in its 23rd year and had named Dublin's Guinness Storehouse as Europe's top attraction in 2015. The awards are held via an open-vote and are known as 'the Oscars of the travel industry', reports the Irish Independent.

Titanic Belfast opened its doors in 2012 but has already welcomed three million visitors, including the likes of Queen Elizabeth, Hillary Clinton and acclaimed director James Cameron, who won 11 Oscars with his 1997 film 'Titanic'.

Speaking about the award, Tim Husbands MBE and the chief executive of Titanic Belfast said: "After only four years in operation, to be recognised and beat off stiff competition from Europe’s most iconic landmarks is a true honour."

Other winners at the ceremony included Lufthansa for Europe's Leading Airline, Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul for Leading Hotel and Saint Petersburg as Leading Destination. The Grand Final Gala Ceremony will be held in the Maldives this December where the regional winners will compete for the title of best in the world.
