Two six-bottle lots of Quinta do Noval Nacional 1963 port fetched £23,500 ($36,800) each at a sale in London this week, setting an auction record for vintage port, according to an e-mailed statement from Sotheby’s.
Six magnums of Chateau Lafleur 1982 Pomerol sold for £37,600. The auction totalled £1.23 million pounds, with 88 per cent of lots taken up.
The sale on 19 November came as the broader market for fine wine is showing some signs of revival. The Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 Index has risen since the end of July after a 16-month decline prompted by sliding prices for top Bordeaux.
“Bordeaux sold well” and Burgundy was in demand at the auction, Stephen Mould, European head of Sotheby’s wine department, said in the statement. He described the port as “the brightest star” of the sale.
A case of Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982 Pauillac sold for £22,325 while a two-bottle lot of Romanée Conti 2001 Domaine de la Romanée Conti Burgundy and a six-bottle lot of Le Pin 2000 from Bordeaux’s right bank fetched £12,338 pounds each.
