Connachts First Distillery In 100 Years Unveils Its New Whiskey

The Shed Distillery, Co.Leitrim, which is the first distillery to operate in Connacht in more than one hundred years is set to unveil its first cask of whiskey today.

The Irish Whiskey Association (IWA) has welcomed the news that the first whiskey produced in Connacht in over a century will come of age this week, according to a statement released today (21 December).

“Irish whiskey remains the world's fastest growing spirit category. But global success is built on local endeavour. This can be see nowhere better than in The Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo where a rural community is now home to world-conquering spirits business,” said the head of the IWA, William Lavelle.

“Here we see how the Irish Whiskey Renaissance is delivering jobs and inward investment into rural communities.”

According to the The Shed’s owner PJ Rigney, it is the intention of the company to produce about 250,000 litres of Irish Whiskey annually once the distillery is in full operation.

New Visitor Centre

Next year, The Shed will also be unveiling their new €1.5 million visitor centre which is expected to attract 10,000 visitors in its first year.

The distillery forecasted that it is it expecting that up to 25 people will be employed there.

"What The Shed Distillery has achieved is being replicated throughout Ireland, as new distilleries and visitor centres are delivering for communities, urban and rural, right across the country," Lavelle added.

“On behalf of the Irish whiskey industry, I wish to congratulate Pat Rigney, his family, investors and staff on the success of The Shed Distillery and I wish them all the best with their new Irish whiskey product."
