Cork's Spike Island Named World's Second Leading Tourist Attraction

Cork’s Spike Island has taken the number-two spot in the category of ‘World’s Leading Tourist Attraction’ at the World Travel Awards 2017, coming in behind Machu Picchu, in Peru.

According to the Irish Examiner, Spike Island triumphed over both Mount Kilimanjaro and Dubai’s Burj Khalifa skyscraper, which were among the nine locations shortlisted in the category.

In the wake of the announcement, Fortress Spike Island Cork issued a statement, saying, “We are so proud and want to thank all our amazing staff and volunteers for their hard work. Our thanks, also, to all our visitors for choosing to come to us, and to Cork County Council and Fáilte Ireland for your support – and, of course, thanks to all in Cobh for helping us to get this far. We will endeavour to recognise individual involvement now that the journey is complete.”

This represents the latest in a line of accolades for Spike Island this year, following its becoming the number-one tourist attraction on TripAdvisor for Cork and being named Europe’s leading tourist attraction in October.

Spike Island generates over €3.5 million every year for the Cobh and East Cork economies, as well as bringing thousands of tourists to the area on an annual basis.
