Diageo Announces Waterford Brewery Closure

Diageo has announced it is to close its Waterford brewery later this year, with the loss of 21 jobs, it was revealed yesterday.

Brewery operations will be transferred to St James' Gate following the closure, with the company pledging to support its displaced employees in "exploring alternative employment through career management expertise, career counselling and outplacement support," according to a company statement.

The company added that it "regrets that we are required to make this decision in order to maintain our global competitiveness."

Diageo announced an investment of approximately €153 million in its brewing facilities in Dublin last year, and is currently in the process of installing 27 new fermentation and maturation vessels at the St James' Gate site, which once in place will be able to brew 300,000 pints every two hours using 26 tonnes of malt and barley.
