The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has served a total of eight food businesses with enforcement orders in June, with seven being forced to close and one handed a prohibition order.

Two closure orders were served under the FSAI Act, 1998 while a further five were closed under EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs Regulations). Cumiskey's Pub on Blackhorse Avenue, Dublin 7 was served a prohibition order, banning the sale of an unsafe product or food item.

Chief executive of the FSAI Dr Pamela Byrne previously said that that the closure orders had "serious negative implications" for the businesses, and the food industry as a whole in Ireland. Food outlets need to ensure the safety of their food, she said.

"There can be no justification for these breaches, which can endanger consumers’ health and undermine the confidence they should expect to have in the safety of the food they eat."

In May, the FSAI served an unprecedented fourteen closure orders for breaches in food safety legislation. The food outlets served closure orders in June were as follows:

- Shanghai House (restaurant), 13 Upper Cork Street, Mitchelstown, Cork

- Mr Wong (take away), 81 Main Street, Cavan

- D Limit African & European Restaurant, 61A Ballybough Road, Dublin 3

- Posh Nosh (take away), 1 Millstream, Moorehall, Ardee, Louth (Two Closure Orders were served on Posh Nosh in June)

- ‘Fish & Chips’ catering trailer (chip van), Main Street, Roundfort, Hollymount, Mayo

- Pearl River (take away), 62 Phibsborough Road, Phibsborough, Dublin 7

- Hotel Curracloe (activity closed: all food preparation and service activities in and from the kitchen and ancillary areas), Curracloe, Enniscorthy, Wexford
