Franciscan Well Introduces Canned Beers Range

Franciscan Well is introducing a new 330ml can format for its craft beers. It is also rebranding its range in both the on- and off-trade sectors with a new logo featuring an archway.

The new logo more clearly reflects the provenance of the brand and positions Franciscan Well as an authentic craft brewery from Cork.

Rebel Red, Friar Weisse and Chieftain IPA will be available in 330ml cans in the off-trade across Ireland from August 2016, with selected on-trade sites also stocking the product.

It is the first time Franciscan Well has canned any of its beers and the first time consumers will be able to buy Friar Weisse or Chieftain IPA in the off-trade.

The decision to can is in keeping with internationally recognized best practices for freshness and sustainability, with cans better preserving flavours and having infinite recyclability.

Canning is also part of an international trend which has seen consumers increasingly choosing to buy craft beer in a can instead of a bottle. In Ireland craft beer sold in cans accounts for approximately 15 percent of sales in the off-trade, and that figure is expected to double over the next few years.

Commenting on the decision, Shane Long, founder of Franciscan Well, said: “We always prioritise ways to ensure that taste and quality are maximized. The decision to move to the canned format reflects the growing trend within craft beer internationally, whereby more and more products are sold in 330ml can format. This is something that has been prevalent in the U.S. and has proven extremely popular. We are confident this will be the case in Ireland as we roll out craft in a can for consumers here in Ireland.”
