GAA Birthplace Hayes Hotel Sold At Auction

Hayes Hotel in Thurles, Co. Tipperary sold for €650,000 at the Allsop auction in the RDS on Tuesday.

Hayes Hotel is recognised as the place where the GAA was founded in 1884, after Michael Cusack held a meeting in the hotel to discuss how Irish pastimes could be preserved.

The bidding opened at €475,000 and rose steadily due to several competing bidders. It was finally sold for €650,000, which was well in excess of the reserve of €450,000 - €500,000 and closer to the original asking price of €750,000. A solicitor acting for an unnamed client secured the property.

The property entered receivership in April 2013 but has remained open. There had been several calls for the GAA to purchase and preserve the hotel, including those from former GAA president and MEP Sean Kelly, but the GAA has said that it is not in the business of running hotels.

The hotel has a reception, lounge bar, coffee dock, two nightclubs and 30 bedrooms.
