Funding Announced For Donegal, Knock, Kerry And Shannon Airports
It has been announced that Donegal Airport, Ireland West Airport Knock, Kerry Airport and Shannon Airport will receive funding to invest in their existing infrastructures to help the airports cope with the adverse financial impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on them.
According to The Irish Times, the funding will contribute towards capital expenditure in the areas of safety, security and sustainability, to contribute to what Minister for State Hildegarde Naughton, who announced the funding, described as the "greening" of Irish airports.
Under the existing Regional Airports Programme, Donegal Airport will receive €876,525, Ireland West Airport Knock will receive €2.2 million and Kerry Airport will receive €1.7 million.
Meanwhile, Shannon Airport will receive €6.3 million under the COVID-19 regional State airports programme 2021.
Naughton said that each airport received the funding allocation that was requested for their respective projects.
Projects Being Funded
The Irish Times quotes Naughton as saying that many of the projects that the funding is supporting will "incorporate valuable climate benefits" such as the replacement of currently used vehicles with more efficient, low-emission vehicles and the replacement of existing airfield and external lighting with LED lighting.
Other projects that the funding will be used to fund include new safety and security systems that incorporate more energy-efficient components and components that can be recycled when their service life ends.
The Irish Times quotes Naughton as saying, "I am delighted to be approving these capital allocations in what has been an incredibly difficult year on our regional airports.
"This funding represents a strong commitment by government to help Ireland's regional airports remain financially sustainable as they plan to move beyond the largest exogenous shock that the sector has ever faced."
Kerry Airport CEO Statement
The Irish Times quotes Kerry Airport Ireland CEO John Mulher as saying in response to the announcement of the funding, "Today's announcement of record capital funding is yet another example of how this government ensures we will have the assets and capability to maintain and continue to build a safe, secure and more environmentally-conscious platform towards recovery.
"Undoubtedly we will need to wrestle through for a time. However, record vaccination rates and funding such as this pave the way to unfettered travel that we all long for again."
Ireland West Airport Knock Statement
Meanwhile, Ireland West Airport Knock chairman Arthur French stated, "We welcome today's announcement of funding towards capital expenditure projects by the minister of state at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton TD, which will assist the airport in undertaking important safety, security and sustainability related projects in the coming months. We also wish to acknowledge the continued support of ministers Naughton and Ryan and the Department of Transport during what continues to be a very challenging time for the airport due to the continue impact of COVID-19."
