Work On New Hotel And Office Development In Cork City Commences
Work on a €45 million hotel and office development at Morrison's Island in Cork city has commenced.
As reported by The Irish Examiner, contractor Cavan-based Elliot Group have moved onto the 0.65 acre site that was formerly the location of Moore's Hotel, and Mark Elliott, who is CEO of the Greenleaf Group, which is developing the site along with Warren Private are developing the site, said that it should be ready for the autumn of 2023.
The development area is reportedly approximately 8,500 square metres in size and takes in numbers 9-14 Morrison's Quay, 5-5A Fitton Street, 1 Keeffe Street, and adjoining lands that back onto Catherine Street and Keeffe Street.
The development will reportedly include a 6,800 square metre 187-bedroom Premier Inn venue and offices in one ground-floor section, and will reportedly involve the full refurbishment of numbers 11, 12 and 13 Morrison's Quay and transforming them into high-quality, own-door office buildings, with their 19th century façades being conserved.
Numbers 11, 12, and 13 Morrison's Quay will reportedly be at the centre of the development, with two new five storey hotel blocks reportedly book-ending these buildings.
Elliot reportedly that the bedrooms in the Morrison's Island Premier Inn hotel will average 20 square metres in size, and that the hotel will also contain a bar, a restaurant and reception areas.
There will reportedly be no car parking on site, and ground floor offices in one of the hotel blocks will reportedly have access from Catherine Street.
The development site is reportedly owned by Quakeside Ltd, which is reportedly believed to have purchased it for €7 million in 2019, and the architect firm on the project is reportedly MDO Architects, Dublin.
The planned Morrison's Island hotel will be the Whitbread Group-owned Premier Inn brand's first hotel in Ireland outside of Dublin.
Premier Inn Expansion In Ireland
Premier Inn has reportedly just completed pre-opening works at a 97-bed hotel on Dublin's South Great George's Street, for which Elliot Group was reportedly also the contractor, and which is reportedly due to open in October.
Three more Dublin Premier Inns are currently under construction - a 113-bed venue at Gloucester Street, a 151-bed venue at Newmarket Square and a 262-bed venue at the Castleforbes development in the docklands - while a fourth venue at Twilfit House on Abbey Street is at pre-construction stage.
Whitbread property development manager for Ireland Matt Gent reportedly said that the company is "actively looking" at sites in Limerick, Galway, and Dublin, but that it dies not have anything else planned for Cork.
