Julie Dupouy Shines In Sommelier Comp

Last month’s Best Sommelier of the World competition – which took place in Japan – saw Paolo Basso, representing Switzerland, take the top prize. Véronique Rivest representing Canada, 2nd place, and Aristide Spies representing Belgium in 3rd place proved just too much for Julie Dupouy, the Irish entrant, who found the competition and tastings a great learning experience. “She was a great ambassador for Ireland and the Irish Guild of Sommeliers and was one of the highest placed Irish contestants in many years,” said Andrew O' Gorman, Secretary, Irish Guild of Sommeliers. “No doubt Julie will feature in national and international competitions in the future.” 54 candidates sat a full-day examination which comprised written papers covering all aspects of beverages – ranging from the wines of the world to spirits, liqueurs, beers, non-alcoholic drinks including teas and coffees. Then came a blind tasting of two wines along with the identification of three spirits. This was followed on day two by the semi-finals and the finals on day three. For the final competition the candidates assembled before an audience of 5,000 guests at the Tokyo International Forum.
