Kevin Thornton To Close Dublin Restaurant

Top Irish chef Kevin Thornton is to close Thornton's Restaurant, located in the Fitzwilliam Hotel, at the end of October.

After more than 25 years in business, top chef Thornton told The Irish Times that losing its long-held Michelin star last year, added to the restaurant's lease expiring and being deterred by "bonkers" Dublin city centre rents, prompted him to make the "very sad" decision.

He said he now has plans to develop a high-end corporate and wedding catering enterprise.

Thornton previously described the loss of his Michelin star last September as "baffling, sad".

Originally Thornton was going to keep the restaurant open until Christmas Eve, but said after "working 18 hours a day for the last 30 years I decided to take the break earlier".

Speaking about his future, Thornton added: "This is not the end it is just the beginning of a whole new chapter."
