Shebeen Chic Owner Accused Of Defrauding Revenue By Its Liquidator

The official liquidator to Jay Bourke's Shebeen Chic Bar, which closed in 2011 with the loss of 21 jobs, has reported him to the business watchdog and accused him of trading in a "reckless" manner.

Liquidator PJ Lynch also accused the high profile restaurateur of intending to defraud the revenue commission, a claim which Bourke strongly denies.

The liquidator also indicated in legal filings he would be applying to the High Court to have Mr Bourke, disqualified from running a company in future.

He has already reported Mr Bourke to the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement after investigating the running of the business.

Sebeen Chic opened in 2008, promoting itself as an 'eco-friendly' pub after the interior had been completely decked out with recycled goods.

The pub on South Great George's Street closed in 2011 after falling into rental difficulty.

It was put into liquidation last year by the Revenue Commissioners over unpaid VAT and PAYE/ PRSI of €92,000.

The Irish Independent reports that the High Court is expected to hear an application from Mr Lynch next week for an order to compel Mr Bourke and a co-director to hand over documents and co-operate with the liquidator. In a letter to Mr Bourke in January, Mr Lynch warned the restaurateur about his co-operation and claimed the business had traded while insolvent.
