Skellig Michael Reopens To Tourists

Irish island Skellig Michael, which is now world famous for being the site at the end of 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, opened to the public on Sunday.

As reported by The Independent, the opening date for the island, which is located off the coast of Kerry, was put in jeopardy by a recent rockfall close to its OPW base. However, OPW staff and their safety contractor have managed to quell any concerns surrounding public safety and after an inspection by the OPW's structural engineer on May 10, the thumbs up was given to allow tourists to travel to the island from this weekend.

Skellig Michael was thrust into the international spotlight again recently when it was featured prominently in the trailer for the forthcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is expected to provide a further boost to its tourism numbers this summer.

Boat trips to the island, which will run from May 14 through to October 2, will cost sightseers €60 and will be weather-dependent.
