Hotels, pubs and cafes that avail of public Wi-Fi networks may be at risks of having their personal and financial data hacked.
Smarttech, a Cork-based security company issued the warnings after finding serious security flaws in ten well-known Irish hotels.
The company said that even a novice hacker could easily access email login data, credit card details, online banking information, Paypal account details and social media passwords. The computer engineers could even access the data from outside the hotels at certain points.
Under EU law, the owners must make sure that their network is 100% secure for their customers.
The Irish Hotels Federation advised hotels to inform guests of the Wi-Fi warning to ensure they have appropriate internet security installed on their devices while using the services.
