A Smashing Vintage: Fake Château Lafite Bottles Destroyed

In the Chinese city of Shenzen, an irate wine dealer has held a public destruction of thousands of knock-off bottles of first-growth Château Lafite.

The unidentified trader spent over seven million yuan ($1.4 million) on 13,069 bottles of the Bordeaux wine, though precisely how many were counterfeits has not been divulged to the media.

This sort of revelation is nothing new, however: fake Lafite is a massive problem in China, and it has been estimated that half the bottles sold in the country are fake.

Château Lafite Rothschild spends a lot of time and money attempting to bring counterfeiters to justice. Chinese police occasionally unearth huge "factories" which produce fake wines.
