New Government Plans To Introduce 'Sugar Tax’ On Drinks

The Government is set to introduce a levy on sugary drinks, according to the Programme for Government published this week.

The document confirms the Department of Health’s plans to introduce a “sugar tax”, however it does not outline how much such a levy would be.

Earlier this year, Food and Drinks Industry Ireland criticized the UK’s introduction of a sugar tax, pointing to a lack of evidence that it would reduce obesity, and calling on the Irish state not to introduce the same measures.

The tax comes under the new Government’s ‘Creating a Healthy Ireland’ plan, which also restates plans to enact the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill, and push for a Tobacco-free Ireland by 2025.
