Whisky Drinkers To Turn Green With Help From UK State Lender

Scottish whisky distilleries will get funds to help reduce their energy waste and electricity bills from the UK’s state-backed Green Investment Bank.

It will distribute €5 million ($8.5 million), with half of that from the lender and half from private companies, the London-based bank said today in an e-mailed statement.

About €1.2 million is going into installation of a wood pellet-fuelled biomass boiler at Bacardi Ltd.’s Aberfeldy distillery in Perthshire with other projects to follow.

"This will be our second investment in biomass solutions for energy generation in the UK," Stuart Lowthian, Barcardi global technical director, said in the statement. "The first was in our Bombay Sapphire gin distillery at Laverstoke Mill and we will be following up with a similar biomass investment in our tequila distillery in Mexico later this year."
