Merrion Square Lights Up This Christmas

Minister for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring switched on the Christmas lights display at Merrion Square yesterday which is being sponsored by ESB.

This is an initiative of the Merrion Square Innovation Network to promote the square as a tourist attraction for locals and international people. Fáilte Ireland and some associates came up with the idea.

37 businesses and stakeholders gathered together last year to organize fun events to promote the area. These events include Christmas on the Square, which was held again last weekend.

"This is a special part of Dublin with an important Georgian heritage, which has too often been overlooked by tourists and even by Dubliners," said the Minister.

"Thanks to an ongoing campaign and events like this one today we are hoping to change that. Since the initiative was launched last year, many of the Georgian buildings in the square have opened their doors to the public for the first time. This promises to be a magical Christmas in Dublin, and Merrion Square will be back in the spotlight for the New Year's Eve Ultimate Gathering to finish off the year."
