Molly Malone Vandalised

The Molly Malone statue was vandalised with graffiti yesterday.

The statue had been removed from her usual home at the bottom of Grafton Street in May and cleaned and refurbished. Less than a week ago she was unveiled outside the Dublin Tourism Office on Suffolk Street, after being moved there to ensure she did not get damaged by the Luas Cross City works. Instead, Dublin City Council had to worry about damage of a different kind.

Dublin City Business Improvement District tweeted a picture of the vandalism saying, "We spend thousands each year removing graffiti from businesses. Now much loved public monuments targeted."

The graffiti covered most of her chest and is believed to have been done between 7am and 9.30 am. Luckily Dublin City Council, who are responsible for the statue, were quick to clean her up and she is back to her regular self.

She will return to her usual home when the Luas Cross City works are completed, which is estimated to be by late 2017.
