New €65m Fáilte Ireland Scheme Receives Huge Number Of Applicants

A new €65 million Capital Investment Scheme launched by Fáilte Ireland has received 113 grant applications "from every corner of the country", according to Fáilte Ireland chief executive Shaun Quinn.

The scheme was launched last June with the aim of developing new tourism projects and boosting current tourism experiences, with grants in excess of €200,000 and up to €5 million being made available until 2020. Applicants are judged by their potential to boost overseas visitor growth, create jobs and ability to promote the Fáilte Ireland brands The Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s Ancient East and Dublin A Breath of Fresh Air, reports The Irish Times

Planned outcomes for the scheme include improving the storytelling for Ireland's Ancient East, better access to the coast and sea on the Wild Atlantic Way and improved access to Dublin's heritage and literary culture.

The awards will be given in the beginning of 2017 and that further applications will be sought later this year.

"The scheme is central to the future development of the tourism sector and will ultimately fund a number of big, bold ideas which have the scale, impact and appeal to make Ireland a more compelling destination for overseas visitors," Quinn said.

The scheme is open to public, private and voluntary sectors, however applicants must be solvent and meet European Union state aid rules. Projects that are ineligible for the funding include food, beverage and accommodation proposals, mobile apps, breweries and distilleries except for their associated visitor facilities, golf courses, festivals and events, and some marinas.

Those applicants that are successful will only receive their capital expenditure and external consultancy costs covered.
