UK To Call For Creation Of Irish Customs Border Post-Brexit

It's expected that the UK government will announce this week that part of its proposals to leave the EU involves the institution of a customs border between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

The Irish Times reports that London and DUP sources have claimed that a Brexit position paper will be published by the British government this Wednesday (August 16), calling for the creation of a "light touch" border in Ireland.

Sources also assert that the paper will attempt to curb the affect of such a border by making it electronic where possible, with the incorporation of vehicle spot checks, number plate recognition technology and CCTV equipment to monitor the movement of goods between the north and the south.

The same sources say that the paper will suggest the implementation of a Schengen Zone-inspired agreement for the purpose of maintaining the free movement of Irish residents in and out of the UK.
