Ten Jobs Go As Galway Cafe Downsizes After Council Dispute

The owner of the Gallery Cafe in Gort has decided to give up the premises after ongoing disputes with Galway County Council.

Last year, owner Sarah Harty erected some decking outside the premises to cover up potholes on the footpath and make the best of the brilliant weather.

She had first requested that the council repair the potholes on the footpath, but was told that the side street footpath was not a priority.

Then, she was ordered to remove the decking by Galway County Council and was faced with a fine of €5,000.

The fine was reduced to €450 when it came to court this month, but Ms Harty told the Irish Independent she was now giving up the premises, because without decking or chairs, it was a constant battle to entice customers into the cafe.

Ms Harty will now move back to her original premises, which seats forty fewer customers.

"I will have to let go some staff. I currently have 16 but that will drop back to six now," she said.
