Demand For Alternative Flavoured Ciders On The Increase

Following on from the launch of Bulmers 'Forbidden Flavours' last year, and given the plethora of flavour types available in the Cider category, the latest Consumer Insights report from Empathy Research has found that demand for 'alternative' cider flavours is on the increase.

Bulmers is the most well-known brand of alternative-flavoured ciders, scoring the highest in terms of spontaneous awareness (77%). This was followed by Kopparberg (30%) and Orchard Thieves (28%).

While the majority (74%) of regular cider drinkers have tried alternative flavours of cider before, 1 in 4 (26%) indicated they have not. Male cider drinkers (29%) are less likely to have tried alternative flavours of cider than female cider drinkers (19%).

More than 3 out of 4 (79%) of those who have tried alternative flavours of cider have tried pear flavoured cider, while seven out of 10 (70%) indicated they have tried mixed berry flavoured cider before.

Other alternative flavours of cider include strawberry and lime (43%) and lemon (11%).

Of those who drink cider regularly and have tried alternative ciders, over half (56%) indicated they prefer to stick to traditional cider, while almost 1 in 5 (17%) now prefer alternative-flavoured cider.

Sweetness is the number one thing that would put more than half (52%) of regular cider drinks off drinking alternative-flavoured ciders.
