DAA Warns Brexit Will Spell Fewer Flights and Higher Prices To UK

Dublin Airport Authority CEO Kevin Toland has told a Seanad Special Select Committee on Brexit that airlines will be offering less routes to the UK at higher prices from next spring.

He also warned that in the wake of its withdrawal from the EU, Britain will become a bigger competitor to Ireland both in relation to tourism and the provision of flights to regional airports in the UK.

The Irish Independent reports that the Seanad was told that the Irish airline industry needs to deepen its connectivity by increasing long-haul flight numbers and building a new runway at Dublin Airport in order to mitigate the fallout from Brexit.

Toland also advised that duty-free shopping between Ireland and the UK should be introduced immediately after Brexit comes into effect and said that Dublin Airport is currently at 87% capacity from 5am to midnight daily and the construction of another runway is essential to ensuring that Ireland remains the preferred location for tourism and business.
