The Cork International Hotel has won the Visit Cork Green Award for 2021.

Details

The award was given to the Cork International Hotel by the Cork Convention Bureau (CCB) for its overall sustainability performance.

The Cork International Hotel set a number of goals to reduce its carbon footprint, energy consumption and waste, and created both a "green team" and a "greening manifesto" to encourage a more environmentally-aware culture at the venue.

The members of the hotel's "green team" took part in a six month training programme with "50 Shades Greener".

Additionally, a rooftop garden, which provides the hotel's restaurant and bar with herbs and vegetables, was constructed at the hotel, and a rainwater harvesting system provides the garden with water.

Other initiatives included the construction of a bee hotel and signing up to the Irish Pollinator Plan, and the CCB praised the hotel and Trigon Hotels for ongoing projects with Cope Foundation and Ability@Work to promote workforce diversity and inclusion, with teams from the hotel helping to develop a sensory garden at the headquarters of Cope Foundation in Montenotte as part of a partnership with the organisation, and the Cork International Hotel Community Spirit Awards were commended by the judges as well.

Cork International Hotel General Manager Statement

Cork International Hotel general manager Carmel Lonergan stated, "We are thrilled to receive the Visit Cork Green Award for 2021 from the Cork Convention Bureau. We are committed to ensuring that our activities have the least possible detrimental effect on the environment. We're already seeing the results and it is thanks to the hard work of the entire team. It is also really important for us to have a positive impact on our local community. The Cork International Hotel Community Spirit Award was set up in 2021 to honour the unsung heroes in Cork and it was so inspiring to see the calibre of entries and winners throughout the year. We look forward to continuing our sustainability journey into 2022."
