Permission Denied For Extension To Dublin's Ashling Hotel

Following last month's news that a proposal for an extension to Dublin's Ashling Hotel which would see the construction of an eight-storey aparthotel adjacent to the venue had been met with opposition from An Taisce, it's now been announced that the planning application submitted for the project by Galway hoteliers Kevin, Frank and Mary Flannery has been turned down by Dublin City Council.

According to The Irish Independent, the plans were rejected on the basis that the proposal does not justify the demolition of four buildings that include a property at No. 6 Parkgate Street which appears in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH).

Furthermore, the council declared that the scale and elevational treatment of the proposed new building does not contribute positively to the character or distinctiveness of the area and venue's setting. The council stated, "The proposal would therefore be contrary to development plan provisions and to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area."
