Ashford Castle’s Paddy Costello Marks 50 Years Of Service

Paddy Costello is celebrating 50 years of service of at Ashford Castle, in Co. Mayo, this week.

Costello joined Ashford Castle as a front of house porter on 1 June 1976. Over the decades, his role has evolved into that of lounge ambassador, where he has become known for his deep local knowledge and natural gift for storytelling.

'Wonderful Sense Of Humour'

"As we celebrate this remarkable anniversary, Paddy’s colleagues are also celebrating a man who, for half a century, has helped shaped the great welcome for which Ashford Castle is known," said Niall Rochford, managing director of the Ashford Estate.

"The role of lounge ambassador is so well suited to a man whose professionalism, stories and wonderful sense of humour have delighted generations of guests and made each visit feel both unique, yet familiar."

However, looking back on his five decades at Ashford Castle, Costello speaks most fondly of the families he has come to know across generations.

Many he met as children and is now greeting again as adults and Costello is looking forward to welcoming familiar faces, and new ones, for many more years to come.

'Special And Unique'

Originally from Knocknageeha near Newport in Co. Mayo, he is the second eldest of four siblings but considers the Ashford estate his second home.

Costello speaks warmly of his colleagues and the lifelong friendships he has made over the years. Describing the Castle as ‘one big, happy family’ he says, “I’ve seen lots of changes down through the years but there’s some things that have stayed the same, such as the warm welcome for every guest and the lovely feeling you get when you walk through the doors of the castle. I’m so proud that for 50 years I’ve been part of something so special and unique.”
