Revenue Writes To Airbnb Hosts To Remind Them Of Tax Obligations

Approximately 12,000 Airbnb hosts are to receive a letter from Revenue reminding them that they are liable to pay tax on cash earned from letting their properties.

The Irish Times reports that Airbnb has supplied Revenue with details of Republic residents who have used the site's services to let rooms, apartments and houses to tourists and other visitors.

A Reminder Of Obligation

The letter being sent to hosts from Revenue states, "We would like to remind you of your obligation to tell Revenue about this income", as well as informing recipients that if they have already made a "correct and complete" tax return, they do not have to take any further action.

However, if a person has earned income from Airbnb and failed to inform Revenue, or submitted an incorrect tax return, the letter warns, "you will need to correct your tax affairs."

Revenue says it is supporting voluntary compliance by providing a service that makes it easy for taxpayer to meet their obligations.

Follow-Up Checks

The letter goes on to state, "To maximise the compliance among recipients of income from the provision of short-term accommodation, Revenue will also carry out a range of follow-up compliance checks to ensure that returns are filed and are correct."
