Starwood Hotels Expands Smartphone Key Technology

Starwood Hotel & Resorts, which has over 1,300 properties worldwide, is expanding its keyless room entry system app which allows hotels guests to use their smartphones as a room key.

The technology, called SPG Keyless, was first launched in November 2014 and was a first for the hospitality industry.

The latest version of it will be launched at even more Starwood properties with increased mobile check-in capabilities, and will be made available exclusively to guests that are part of its loyalty programme, according to Successfulmeetings.com.

Starwood hotel group, which runs brands such as Le Méridien, The Westin, Sheraton, and Four Points, will extend the technology to a select amount of those properties across 30 countries.

A spokesperson for The Westin hotel in Dublin told Hospitality Ireland that at the moment the hotel has no immediate plans to implement the technology here, it is something that is likely in the future.

There are currently 350,000 users registered for SPG Keyless around the world.
