Ashford Castle Wins Best Resort Hotel In UK And Ireland Accolade

Travel + Leisure magazine readers have voted Mayo's Ashford Castle as the Best Resort Hotel in the United Kingdom and Ireland, beating the likes of The Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland and England's Cliveden House.

The 5-star hotel, which occupies a thirteenth century castle, has 350 acres, 83 guestrooms, and had re-opened last year after a €47 million restoration. Changes included adding a 32-seater cinema, a new spa and swimming pool, a nine-hole golf course, as well as a cigar terrace and wine cellar, according to The Journal.

Commenting on the win, general manager Niall Rochford said: "We are honoured to be recognised by Travel + Leisure readers amongst the “World’s Best” in 2016. The number one resort & inn accolade in Great Britain and Ireland is a fantastic acknowledgement and a true testament to the lasting impression an experience at Ashford Castle has on our guests."
