The Sandymount Hotel Marks 70th Anniversary

The Sandymount Hotel, in Dublin 4, is celebrating 70 years of continuous family ownership and hospitality this May – longer than any other hotel property in Dublin.

Originally opened in 1955, as a modest bed-and-breakfast, the property has since grown into a four-star hotel, now led by the third generation of the Loughran family, who have recently overseen a significant refurbishment of the rooms and guest areas.

“This anniversary is deeply personal for me, my family, and our loyal staff,” said Gerard Loughran, co-owner. “It’s not just about a building or a number – it’s about the thousands of moments, memories and connections that have shaped the Sandymount Hotel and our family over seven decades.

“We’re incredibly proud to continue the legacy my grandparents began back in 1955, and to do so alongside a team whose loyalty, kindness and care have been the heart of this place from the beginning.”

It all began in 1955, when George and Rosaleen Loughran purchased No. 7 Herbert Road and opened a small bed-and-breakfast to support their growing family. As demand grew, so did the hotel, gradually expanding into neighbouring properties and evolving into the much-loved 187-bedroom hotel that it is today. It was rebranded from the Mount Herbert Hotel to the Sandymount Hotel in 2011, to reflect its unique sense of place.

“Our wonderful guests, past and present, are at the heart of it all – as is the community that we are lucky to be part of here in Sandymount,” said Loughran. “This celebration is for everyone who has played a part in our story – past, present and future!”

To mark the milestone, the hotel hosted a celebratory event on 8 May for the local community, long-standing staff, and friends of the hotel. In addition, visitors can avail of a 20% discount on bed-and-breakfast bookings made in May for all stays until the end of December. Those taking advantage of the offer can avail of one of the hotel’s recently refurbished rooms, part of an ongoing programme of upgrades that honour the hotel’s heritage while embracing modern comfort.

The bar team has also crafted a number of 70th-anniversary cocktails, inspired by the hotel’s history, which include Irish Maid, the Aristocrats Sand’E’mount Tea, Mount Herbert’s Comfort, and the Temperance Turn.
